So Scott goes about his work, and with a couple reels to go, things go a bit astray plot-wise. The titles and opening sequence make quite an impact. Lewis was generally an inventive, individual director who could get the most and even something extra out of a good script. One of the things I liked regarding the film was the supporting cast of actresses, Jean Parker and Ruth Donnelly. I borrowed a gunbelt and a Colt. And then there is Calem himself a man who to everyone seems solid, happy and relaxed, he jokes with his landlady each morning and walks proudly to the jail, but then behind those close doors he is worn out, forced to seek solace in a cell right at the back where he can relax.
Lewis over the past year or two. Just as Tally arrives in Medicine Bend, Ware is forced to deal with big-time criminals Thorne Warner Anderson and Clark John Emery , not to mention their hired gun Baskam Michael Pate. Nice little sub plot about the Brions. One of the highlights of A Lawless Street is a lively saloon-hall number performed by Angela Lansbury, who is quite a dish in her revealing stage wardrobe. Well written and directed and good cast. To make matters worse his estranged wife Tally Dickenson arrives in town and it stirs up old feelings as she left him because she couldn't cope watching him kill others in the name of peace.
Except maybe for Angela Lansbury who seemed a little out of place. And in A Lawless Street, this drive is obvious the second the Columbia lady gets out of the way. Up until its surisingly mundane finale, A Lawless Street is one of the best of the Randolph Scott westerns of the 1950s. Have enjoyed them both in many things and it was great to have them both turn up in this Western. Oh boy — was I nervous about getting that part! I hardly recognised Jean Parker. . Scott gets Lawless with Lansbury Having been Marshal for many years across many towns Calem Ware is tired of having to deal with trouble on a daily basis and whilst his current position in Medicine Bend seems to be reasonably calm death still comes knocking most days as gun fighters arrive to try and kill him. She will not come back to him until he has hung up his guns for good.
Anderson's line deliveries are extremely flat and matter of fact, which just makes him that much more detestable somehow. Both the villains are effective, Warner Anderson as the unscrupulous what else? There have been similar jobs in similar towns, lots of them. One of my favorite Randolph Scotts. Scott plays famed marshal Calem Ware, whose strenous activities on behalf of law and order have exacted a toll on his personal life. And Lewis really shines when it comes to building the suspense leading up to the inevitable bar room showdown between the bad guy and the good. The exception to that is Angela Lansbury as Tally Dickenson because it is Tally who struggles with Calem's life and we can feel that she loves him but can't deal with watching him shoot or brawl in order to keep the peace.
It was quite a stylish movie which had a couple of unforgettably staged scenes. It has Randolph Scott delivering the same sort of upstanding character he played in many of his westerns, it has corrupt business men, hired guns plus a romantic angle all of which combine as it builds to an action fuelled climax. We used to count on a two-and-a-half or three million gross domestically and four million or more worldwide. Plus add in a romantic element which sees his one true love, his estranged wife Tally show up in town and you have on the surface a routine western which works through various set pieces till it gets to a final shootout. Not surprisingly, Ruth Donnelly made the most of her role as the landlady who looked after Calem.
At first glance this may seem like no more than just another passable western, but it's got some meat on its bones. Will he do his duty and rid the town of his outlaw element, or will he hang up his guns as Tally wants him to? Scott makes a good, twinkle-eyed loner hero and Angela Lansbury is quite attractive as his leggy showgirl love interest, though she would begin playing mothers of grown children just a few years later but their romance is rather obligatory and uninspired. At every point, the camera seems to be in just the right place. Like most of the Scotts, this one has a terrific cast. But in a way that makes it even more interesting because in those moments of solitude when the real Calem is allowed to come out we get a different Randolph Scott, an almost vulnerable tired old man giving us the contrast needed. Then again, I love anybody who had anything to do with They Were Expendable. Scott plays his end of it masterfully.
Each cut, or decision to go with a long take, feels like the right one. Joining Lewis behind the camera was cinematographer Ray Rennahan, one of the true masters of three-strip Technicolor — he shot the first feature in the process, Becky Sharp 1935. His honest straight-arrow cop seems passive against Richard Contes super slick cruel mobster. Ταινία A Lawless Street 1955 Θέατρο online Παραγωγή ταινιας: 1950-60 Σκηνοθέτης: Joseph H. He is the morally upright man, the quick draw who is not afraid to fight even when the odds are stacked against him. There is also the under explored cleverness of the storyline which sees businessman Hamer Thorne bring showgirl Tally Dickenson to town with an idea of marrying her unaware that she is in fact married to Calem but estranged due to the violent nature of his job. Not too bad an ending even if he did have to go off with Angela which make him seem a bit tamed.
We have a couple of businessmen who see Marshal Calem Ware as the barrier to them turning the town into a gold mine and so are willing to do what ever it takes to get what they want which includes hiring killers to try and kill him. In addition, Frank Hagney and Jeanette Nolan are quite good in parts well crafted by Gamet who wrote eight Scott Westerns in all. Now ironically having mentioned that Calem is a man who hides his real feelings from everyone you have Randolph Scott delivering a very typical Randolph Scott performance. Calem discovers that the arrival of the latest killers is not by accident as someone wants him dead. And never does style get in the way of telling the story. You get a real sense of the wild west slowly being tamed, of it making the uneasy transition from a violent, lawless land to a reasonably civilized place where law and order stand a chance. Lewis always brought a strong sense of style to his pictures — along with a budget-be-damned desire to put something with real flair on the screen.
